5 Ways to Lower Your Electric Bill This Fall
As the weather cools and daylight fades, it’s a perfect time to get proactive about your home’s energy use. At High West Electric, we believe smart electrical strategies aren’t just for summer — fall presents unique opportunities to trim costs and boost efficiency. Here are five practical steps you can take now to lower your electric bill this fall.
Seal Leaks & Improve Insulation
One of the least expensive but most effective ways to reduce energy waste is by stopping drafts and leaks. Check windows, doors, attic hatches, and electrical outlets for air infiltration. Apply weatherstripping or caulk where needed. Also, ensure your attic and wall insulation are sufficient to retain heat as outside temperatures drop. A tighter home envelope means your heating and electrical systems don’t have to work as hard.
Use a Smart or Programmable Thermostat
As you begin heating more frequently, gaining control over temperature scheduling is critical. A smart or programmable thermostat lets you lower temperatures automatically when you’re sleeping, away, or during low-use times. Even trimming just a few degrees during those periods can result in meaningful savings.
Switch to Energy-Efficient Lighting
Lighting is often an easy win. If you haven’t already, replace incandescent or older fluorescent bulbs with LEDs, which consume far less electricity and last much longer. Also, take advantage of fall’s fading daylight by opening blinds during the day and turning off unnecessary lights in unoccupied rooms.
Eliminate “Vampire Loads” & Use Smart Power Strips
Even when turned off, many appliances and electronics draw standby power (often called “vampire loads”). Devices like TVs, game consoles, phone chargers, and coffee makers can quietly add to your monthly bill. Plugging these into smart or switched power strips allows you to shut off power completely when they’re not in use.
Optimize Electric Heating & Hot Water Use
Fall often means transitioning from central air to heating, and hot water usage tends to rise. If your home relies on electric heating, make sure systems are clean and filters are fresh so they run efficiently. For your water heater, consider lowering the thermostat setting (many homes have it higher than needed). Also, washing in cold water and running full dishwasher or washer loads rather than partial loads helps reduce electrical demand.
Small changes — when compounded across weeks and months — add up to real savings. As you prepare for cooler days ahead, a few adjustments to sealing, thermostat settings, lighting, and your approach to power loads can put noticeable downward pressure on your electricity bill.
